Occasionally, customers ask about the origin of our shop name, "Hamagen." In fact, neither the second-generation owner nor the former landlady knows for certain. The name was chosen by the shy first-generation owner, who never gave a clear answer no matter when we asked.

In the local area of Mikawa, where the first owner is from, the fishing port is referred to as "hama," which means "beach" or "coast." The "hama" represents the source of sushi ("gen"). The first-generation owner was very particular about using local fish from Mikawa, so the shop name may reflect that sentiment.

Recalling those memories, I took a boat from Mikawa Isshiki Port to Sakushima at dawn. After a stroll around the island, I returned and headed to a café in Nishio. I enjoyed a generous serving of Nishio matcha cream,  I left feeling satisfied and full!
